The short answer
Children arriving from outside the UAE can join a Dubai school in any year group at any point in the school year, subject to places. You need a valid Emirates ID and, from Year 3 upwards, a transfer certificate from the previous school, attested according to the country you are leaving.
The good news for arriving families: the UAE school system is built for mobility. Children join from abroad all year round, the paperwork is well defined, and the rules deciding which year group your child enters are published. Here is the process, in the order you will meet it.
When you can join
Children transferring from outside the UAE or from another emirate can join a Dubai school in any year group at any point in the school year, subject to the school having a place. Transfers between Dubai schools are more restricted: primary years (FS1 to Year 6) can move any time, Years 7 to 10 must move before the first week of the second semester, and Years 11 to 13 within 60 days of the start of the year, because exam-board rules take over at GCSE and A-level age.
There is no official application season. Schools set their own admissions timelines, and the popular ones fill certain year groups a year or more ahead, with FS1 and FS2 the most competitive entry points. Which year group your child enters
For FS1 to Year 1, age decides, using the new 31 December cut-off. From Year 2 upwards, the transfer certificate (a leaving document from the previous school showing the grade completed) is the primary reference, checked against the official age table. The documents to prepare
- Passport, visa and Emirates ID. A valid Emirates ID is the standard registration document. If the residence visa is still in process, schools can register your child manually with a passport copy and proof the visa is underway, then complete the file once the ID arrives.
- Transfer certificate. Mandatory from Year 3 (Grade 2) upwards when arriving from abroad, and for all years when moving between UAE schools. It needs the previous principal’s signature and stamp.
- Attestation, depending on where you are coming from. Certificates from North America, Western Europe and Australia need only the principal’s signature and stamp. Most other countries also need attestation from the education authority in the origin country plus the UAE embassy there or the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Doing this before you fly is far easier than doing it remotely afterwards.
- Recent school reports. Not always mandatory, but most schools ask for the last one or two years of reports for placement and admissions testing decisions.
Registration and the parent-school contract
In Dubai, enrolment becomes official when the school registers your child in the KHDA system and both sides sign the parent-school contract, which sets out fees, refund terms and obligations. Schools typically ask for a deposit with the offer, and mid-year joiners are usually charged from the month they enrol. Ask the school for its full fee schedule, including registration, transport, uniforms and exam fees, before signing.

What is a transfer certificate?
A leaving document from your child’s previous school confirming the grade completed, signed and stamped by the principal. It is the main reference for placing children in Year 2 and above, and depending on the country it may need government attestation.
Do we need the Emirates ID before applying?
You can apply and even register while the visa and Emirates ID are in process, using the passport and proof the application is underway. The school completes the registration once the ID is issued.
Will my child sit an entrance test?
Most British schools in Dubai run age-appropriate admissions assessments, typically in English and maths, alongside the previous school reports. For early years places, readiness matters more than testing.
