GCSEs in the UAE: a parent’s guide

GCSEs are the first qualifications that follow your child for life, and the UAE version of them comes with its own wrinkles: international boards, two grading scales running side by side, and, in 2026, a cancelled exam season. Here is what parents at British schools in the UAE need to know.

GCSE or IGCSE: what UAE schools actually offer

Most British schools in the UAE enter students for international versions of the GCSE. The main boards are Pearson Edexcel (International GCSE), Cambridge International (Cambridge IGCSE, with more than 70 subjects and exam series in March, June and November), and OxfordAQA (30+ International GCSEs). The qualifications are designed to match the demand of England’s GCSEs, and UK sixth forms and universities treat them as equivalent. Many schools mix boards subject by subject, so it is normal for one child to sit Edexcel maths and Cambridge English.

What the 9-1 grades mean

England replaced A* to G grades with a 9 to 1 scale, where 9 is the highest. The anchor points, set by the regulator Ofqual: the bottom of grade 7 matches the bottom of the old grade A, and the bottom of grade 4 matches the bottom of the old grade C. Grade 4 is the official “standard pass” and grade 5 a “strong pass”. Combined science counts as two GCSEs and gets a double grade such as 8-7.

One UAE quirk: Cambridge IGCSE lets schools choose between the 9-1 scale and the traditional A* to G scale, so children at different Dubai schools, or even in different subjects at the same school, can receive results on different scales. Both are fully recognised.

What happened in 2026, and what it means

In spring 2026, Pearson Edexcel, Cambridge International and OxfordAQA all cancelled their May/June exam sittings in the UAE because of the regional security situation. Students were graded instead through evidence-based contingency arrangements, using coursework, mock results and other assessed work. Schools handled this well overall, but it is worth knowing when you read 2026 results coverage: those grades were awarded on portfolio evidence rather than final papers. Exam series are expected to run normally going forward, and Cambridge schools also have the March and November series available.

The Year 9 to Year 11 timeline

1. Year 9: options. Students choose their GCSE subjects, usually eight to ten, with English, maths and science compulsory at almost every school.
2. Year 10: content. The two-year course begins. Gaps that open here compound quietly, especially in maths and science.
3. Year 11: mocks and exams. Mock exams (usually November to January) matter more than students think; in 2026 they became part of the actual grading evidence. Final exams sit in the summer series, with results in August.
